Not every itchy bite is a bed bug, and panicking over the wrong pest wastes time and money. Before you assume the worst, it helps to know exactly what bed bugs leave behind. Here are the five signs a local pro looks for, and how to tell them apart from fleas, mosquitoes or a simple skin reaction.

1. Bites in a line or cluster

Bed bug bites tend to show up in rows or tight clusters on skin that was exposed while you slept, arms, shoulders, neck, ankles. Mosquito bites are usually random and single. If you wake up with new welts most mornings in a pattern, that is a red flag.

2. Rusty or reddish spots on bedding

Small reddish-brown smears on your sheets, pillowcases or mattress piping come from bugs that were crushed after feeding. They look like little rust stains and often line up along seams.

3. Dark pepper-like dots

Bed bug droppings look like someone tapped a pepper grinder along a seam, a screw hole or the edge of a baseboard. These dark specks are one of the most reliable signs of an established infestation.

4. Shed skins and eggs

As bed bugs grow, they molt and leave pale, translucent casings behind. You may also spot tiny white eggs glued into cracks. Finding these means the bugs are breeding, not just visiting.

5. Live bugs in the seams

Adult bed bugs are flat, reddish-brown and about the size of an apple seed. Check mattress seams, the box spring, the bed frame and the headboard with a flashlight. Nymphs are smaller and nearly see-through, so they are easy to miss.

Where to look first

  • Mattress seams, tags and box springs
  • Headboards, bed frames and nightstands
  • Baseboards, carpet edges and behind outlet covers
  • Couches and recliners where people nap

Seeing two or more? Act now

One sign might be a coincidence. Two or more together usually means bed bugs, and they only multiply from here. For a clear, science-based rundown of identification, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension publishes a helpful bed bug resource. To confirm for certain, a local pro can carry out a bed bug inspection.
